If the city wants to encourage economic growth and attract more businesses, it must take immediate action to remedy these barriers.
California is already infamous for its overwhelming regulatory burden, and Hollister is no exception. The state imposes an astonishing 396,000 regulatory requirements—100,000 more than New York. This excessive red tape creates compliance headaches, drains resources, and makes it difficult for small businesses to survive.
In Hollister specifically, the process of obtaining the necessary permits and licenses is a bureaucratic maze. Business owners must deal with multiple departments, including Planning, Finance, and the County Clerk’s office, each with its own set of requirements and fees.
