The California Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) has released Fire Hazard Severity Zone (FHSZ) maps for Local Responsibility Areas (LRA) throughout the state.

According to OSFM’s website: “Public Resources Code 4201-4204 directs the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) to map fire hazard within State Responsibility Areas (SRA) based on fuel loading, slope, fire weather, and other relevant factors present, including areas where winds have been identified by the department as a major cause of wildfire spread.”

The State Fire Marshal is mandated to classify lands within SRAs into FHSZs. These zones fall into one of the following classifications:

  • Moderate
  • High
  • Very High

According to the maps areas of San Benito county fall into all three classifications.
