To the editor: Developers often justify new construction by claiming that a piece of vacant land holds little value. But that’s not always the case.
Take the Betabel Commercial Development project, which was approved by the county but is facing legal challenges. Tribal leaders tell us they consider this area sacred and scientists tell us this location is important for wildlife. That sounds like valuable land to me.
I’m lucky to live in San Benito County, where there are stunning mountain views and Pinnacles National Park is just a short drive away. Protecting what’s left of the natural habitat so deer, mountain lions and western pond turtles can roam is important to me.
Developers should listen to our concerns with an open mind. They can’t claim this roadside attraction has widespread support if they continue to belittle the Tribal leaders and wildlife experts who want something better for this community.
Sincerely,
