As I begin my third year as your County Clerk-Recorder and Registrar of Voters, I want to reflect on the past year and share some updates with the residents of San Benito County. This year has been a mix of challenges and triumphs, and I’m proud of how our team has risen to the occasion, ensuring that we continue to serve you effectively.
Overcoming Adversity: Rising Above Challenges
One of our toughest challenges came in September 2023 when a devastating fire forced the closure of our Clerk, Recorder, and Elections Offices. Despite this setback, our team’s creativity and hard work allowed us to quickly move to a temporary facility, rebuild, and eventually relocate to a new permanent space. This transition set the stage for one of the most successful election cycles in our county’s history.
A Historic Election Year
The 2024 election cycle showcased our team’s dedication and resilience. Despite the fire, we successfully managed two major elections— the 2024 Primary and General Elections— with unprecedented speed and accuracy. Voter results were available faster than ever, wait times were minimal, and we faced virtually no issues. Our Elections Office earned two prestigious awards this year: the National Association of Elections Officials Freedom Award and the National Association of Counties (NACo) Award for Innovation in Elections.
Serving the Community: The Recorder’s Office
While elections took center stage, our Recorder’s Office has continued its critical work. Our team efficiently processed land documents and property taxes, enhancing communication and service with local title companies and real estate professionals. To better serve our community, we even stayed open during the holidays at the request of local Realtors and Title Companies.
Financial and Staffing Challenges
Looking ahead, we are mindful of the financial challenges we face. A decline in property sale revenues has affected our department’s budget, and we are preparing for potential cuts in staffing and office hours. With staffing levels at their 2008 levels, keeping up with increasing demands is tough. Despite this, our team remains dedicated, ensuring that services like birth applications, land titles, and marriage licenses continue without delays.
Looking Ahead: A Year of Progress
There is much to look forward to in the year ahead. We are excited to launch a new Lobbying Disclosure Portal. This tool will be invaluable for anyone interested in understanding the influence of lobbying in local governance and will strengthen the public’s ability to hold elected officials accountable.
A Heartfelt Thank You
As I begin my third year in office, I remain committed to providing excellent service, maintaining transparency, and upholding your trust. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to serve as your County Clerk-Recorder and Registrar of Voters. Together,we faced challenges, celebrated successes, and made meaningful progress. I’m confident that the year ahead will bring even more positive change.
Thank you for your continued support. Here’s to another year of service and progress. Warm regards,
Francisco Diaz
