What had been a slow Saturday on Dec. 7 in San Juan Bautista ended with the Third Street Historic District’s sidewalks filled with what looked like almost every resident of the small city for the Rotary Club’s annual Holiday in Lights parade.
The newly installed bells at Glad Tidings Church added festive notes to the procession, and rang out with Christmas Carols and hymns for the duration of the parade. Locals joined in the fun, with some, including City Councilmember-elect Jose Aranda riding in his decorated golf cart and former Planning Commissioner John Hopper and Diana Carr riding in theirs.
Graniterock, a regular participant, sent their vintage cement mixer. The San Juan Bautista Youth Soccer League appeared in force with a trailer filled with players. San Juan’s neighboring city sent both their award-winning Hollister High School Scarlet Regiment marching band and the Rancho Maze Band and Colorguard.
Members of the City Council, Planning Commission and departing City Manager Don Reynolds also joined in the procession, as did anyone who had an urge to decorate their car in honor of the season.
