Another milestone has been achieved as part of the State Route 156 (SR 156) Improvement Project with the full re-opening of Mitchell Road/Union Road anticipated to occur by 5 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 2, weather permitting. This two-month closure allowed for the re-construction of the intersection of Mitchell Road so it could be aligned with the new SR 156 expressway.
This follows the successful traffic switch directing travelers onto the newly constructed expressway lanes, just south of the existing SR 156 which occurred in October.
Caltrans will maintain at least one lane in each direction along the new SR 156 expressway while construction on this widening project continues. Travelers are encouraged to
slow down and pay attention to temporary road signage and portable message signs alerting travelers within this active construction zone.
To support the community during these major traffic changes, Caltrans and the Council of San Benito County Governments (SBCOG) created a series of maps in English and Spanish.
The detour maps are available on the SBCOG’s website: https://sanbenitocog.org/transportation-updates.
