As a proud member of the San Benito Health Care District Board for 36 years and a resident of this community since 1963, I’ve witnessed many changes at Hazel Hawkins Hospital. When it transitioned from a private entity to a District Hospital in 1956, it was the right move. Now, facing modern financial and healthcare challenges, it’s clear: the time for change has come again.

Measure X on the ballot is the best path forward for Hazel Hawkins. By allowing the district to enter into a long-term lease and eventual sale to a private entity, we ensure the hospital’s survival and growth. Opponents of Measure X claim the hospital is in fine shape, with millions in the bank, and that a Joint Powers Authority (JPA) run by the County is a better solution. But these claims don’t reflect the reality we’re facing today. With misinformation being spread online, in public forums and in the news media, we the voters need to know the facts.  You can find them here.

The small sum offered by the County to help Hazel Hawkins won’t be enough to cover our operational needs, attract the skilled doctors and staff we need, or expand vital services. In fact, a JPA will likely lead to us needing to ask voters for a costly bond measure just to keep the hospital open. A recent survey shows that voters do not support more bond measures, even for the hospital.

Despite the misinformation being spread, the facts are clear: Hazel Hawkins needs a strong partner with the resources and commitment to sustain and grow our hospital. Voting yes on Measure X secures that future, keeping quality healthcare available in our community for years to come.

If access to healthcare is important to you, please vote yes on Measure X.

X Marks the Spot,

Mary S. McCullough
