The San Benito Board of Supervisors approved a contract to repair Shore Road, which connects Highways 25 and 156. The county awarded the contract to Teichert & Sons Inc., a 100-year-old California company with previous experience in the county, which made the lowest bid. The project will cost $3.5 million.

“We’re slightly under budget, which is good and refreshing because a lot of our other projects have not been at least even a bit under the budget,” said Steve Loupe, the county’s public works administrator.

Teichert’s bid will cover fixing cracks, holes, and sections prone to flooding in the stretch of Shore Road connecting Frazer Lake and San Felipe roads. Originally, the project was conceived in two parts: one, from Frazier Lake Road to Perry Court; and the other, from Perry Court to San Felipe Road. But after seeking bids in January, the county realized it would be cheaper to merge the two projects into one, which ended up delaying the start date.

“I guess we traded time for money,” said Supervisor Dom Zanger.

By Sept. 9, the county had received seven bids and construction will begin in the coming weeks. According to Loupe, clearing of the roadside ditches will be the contractor’s first task and paving will begin in spring.

The $3.5 million will fund repairing 2.5 miles of the road. “There was always this generic notion that it was a million dollars to repave a mile of road,” said Supervisor Kollin Kosmicki. “This confirms that we’re not at that anymore.”
