The Salvation Army Hollister Corps Community Center, in collaboration with the Cesar Chavez Foundation, is launching an impactful program to empower migrant workers and support the unhoused community in San Benito County.

“The partnership between The Salvation Army and the Cesar Chavez Foundation is a testament to the power of collaboration in addressing critical community needs,” said Captain Maria Romero, Corps officer of The Salvation Army Hollister Corps. “By reducing barriers to education and providing essential support to the unhoused, this initiative aims to create a lasting positive impact in San Benito County.”

Through an $8,000 community grant from the Cesar Chavez Foundation, the Army in Hollister will be able to provide the following items:

  • 80 gas cards at $50 each (totaling $3,200) to offset transportation costs associated with attending evening classes.
  • 60 grocery gift cards at $50 each (totaling $2,400) to ensure participants have access to nutritious meals and can focus on their studies.
  • Essential items for unhoused individuals, totaling $2,400, promoting dignity, and meeting their basic needs.

Essential items such as sleeping bags, clothing, and shoes will be distributed to unhoused individuals, along with 50 hot meals served every Sunday. These efforts address both immediate and long-term needs, fostering a sense of stability and well-being within the community.

In addition, The Salvation Army Hollister Corps offers free space for evening ESL (English as a Second Language) classes, held five nights a week. These classes, attended regularly by 35 individuals, provide a critical pathway for participants to improve their language skills and unlock new opportunities for personal and professional growth.
