The Mary Velasco Sellen Senior Center of San Juan Bautista is pleased to announce a grant award funded by a Program Project Grant from the Community Foundation for San Benito County.
The Mary Velasco Sellen Senior Center, established March 2022 by a group of senior itizens who realized there was a need for a place to congregate, socialize, and have a luncheon program without having to drive several miles. On February 17, 2024, the Mary Velasco Sellen Senior Center became a 501c (3) non-profit.
The first luncheon was held on May 1, 2024. Weekly luncheons are held every Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. at Casa Maria, 600 First St. courtesy of Fr. Alberto Cabrera, pastor of Old Mission San Juan Bautista. Meals are prepared in Casa Maria’s commercial kitchen. We are actively seeking a permanent location in San Juan Bautista.
On the first day of the luncheon program, 20 attendees were expected, but twice as many attended. Numbers steadily increase week after week. Some attending have not seen each other for decades. Recently, over 70 attendees enjoyed a Fiesta Rodeo chicken BBQ, July 3.
Key members of the Senior Center are Mary Velasco Sellen’s daughter Karen Stacy, and her granddaughter Sasha Galdos. They create popular menus and prepare meals each week. This continues the family tradition of community service Mary Velasco Sellen was known for. While lunches are free for seniors, donations are gratefully accepted.
The Mary Velasco Sellen Senior Center opened an office at Windmill Plaza, Suite B5 on August 1, 2024. Addition to a luncheon program, plans are to offer seniors computer
training in the future.
The Community Foundation for San Benito County grant makes purchasing computers, supplies, furniture, and culinary equipment and programs for our seniors possible.
