The Union Road Bridge project is nearing completion, as the bridge is expected to open to traffic in late September or early October. The project involves replacing the current bridge on Union Street between Cienega Road and San Benito Street.

According to an update video posted by San Benito County, construction is moving along and concrete is being poured. The new bridge will include two traffic lanes, and ways to accommodate both pedestrian and bicycle traffic. All roads aligned with the bridge will be realigned and reconstructed to provide a better sight distance and to improve traffic flow.

While construction is being completed, travelers should expect some traffic control and flagging, which could cause some delay, but no more than five minutes, the county says. Workers, trucks, and construction equipment can also be expected to be seen entering and exiting the construction site.

The Union Road Bridge is a $40 million project, with almost 90 percent being funded by the federal government and San Benito County paying for 10-12% of the total cost.

The BenitoLink Internship Program is a paid, skill-building program that prepares local youth for a professional career. This program is supported by Monterey Peninsula Foundation AT&T Golf Tour, United Way, Taylor Farms and the Emma Bowen Foundation.
